Just because the Normans invented them in 800 AD and used them to conquer all of Western Europe doesn't mean we should still be using them. What we really need are shin-bindings. These are things (lots of hand-waving going on here :-) attached to the lower skirt of the saddle that the rider kicks-into upon mounting. They support the entire lower leg like a firmly flexible glove. They have dials so that the rider can change the support points throughout the ride as particular muscle sets fatigue. Ride-by-wire systems are tuned to release automatically if a fall becomes *necessary*. Only semi-joking...
