Re: [RC] RC:Core Temp & electrolytes - Diane TrefethenHigh humidity can absolutely do in even the best conditioned of horses if they aren't used to it, whether because they live where humidity isn't a problem or because the humidity is out of season. In 1988, the Gold Coast 50, held on the 22nd of October near Mt Hamilton in California, experienced extremely high humidity. A large number of the horses coming into the "lunch stop" were either already past cut off or so close that with the REST of the afternoon expected to be even hotter, the vets decided not to let them go. I finished 6th on that ride, at 3:20pm. The winner finished at 1:53pm. The AERC office couldn't grasp that the winner of a late season 50 could possibly take almost 7 hours so they recorded all the finishing times AS THE TIME OF DAY THE HORSES FINISHED, not their actual ride time. I already told MM about this but he has been pretty busy so you too can see the results of that ride: http://www.doublejoy.com/erol/RideResults/rrReport.asp?distanceID=arev1597 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
