If I'm riding in the west, I'd not use much water and use a cooler at the check. Pull the saddle get the horse through and then put on a light weight cooler. However, at a 95 degree humid ride in the SE - he'd get tons of water as much as I could get on him. Pour and scrape, pour and scrape........He might get ice packs on this jugular if it were really hot.You ever notice a baseball pitcher. Many times they put on jackets between when they are not pitching. But in August in Baltimore you very seldom see a pitcher with a jacket. It just all depends on the conditions.
