Re: [RC] Credit for 50 miles - Don HustonHello Kristi,You are right. None of the handheld GPS units are dead on all the time. Like Ed, I use electronic quad sheets (Topo! Software) and others to plot my trackpoints and check to see that those points follow the trails that are visible on my software. The end result is that my GPS mileage on trails that show up on my software is always within 2-5% of the mileage from the software. I do not know if it's in writing but I was told that RM's are allowed a 5% variation in mileage so that means a 50 can actually be 47.5 miles. Then assume a maximum of 5% GPS error means my GPS should show at least 45 miles for a properly setup (legal?) 50 mile trail. I would like to see the mileage as close to 50 as possible and to that end I try to make my data as accurate as possible by checking it against existing maps and other GPS units and then make a map for the RM to use as a reference for any changes they want to do or not.
