I have used simple grazing bits (I have 2 just like the one shown in this link) http://www.rods.com/p/502,233_Sweet-Iron-Grazing-Bit.html for 15 years. Lots of whoa if I need it but generally my horses just hold the bit and travel on a loose rein. The short shanks allow them to graze and drink just fine.
