Re: [RC] Teeters/International Riders-Hoof protection? - Barbara McCrary

I can't answer regarding riders in the desert endurance events, but I do know that when I had a woman training our mare in a sandy arena, in very short order, the mare's unshod feet started to wear down.  Think of it as a nail file...the constant trotting and cantering in the sand wears the feet down as if they had been rasped.

Subject: [RC] Teeters/International Riders-Hoof protection?

Hey,

Something I've been thinking about for a while.

What type of hoof protection at these international endurance events do you see?
The president's cup for example recently, did horses have shoes? Was there much of a need. It was all flat sandy soft terrain right? Will the hooves wear down in that soft footing?

Do most horses have shoes? Just regular shoes? Special shoes, pads, etc.?

Any barefoot with some type of hoof boots ever seen?

Steph Teeter? I know you've been all around the world at endurance events.
Any other comments?
Kyle
