Re: [RC] horse that limits portions on her own. - Ellen ZawadaWhile my mare is never off her feed, she does not care for any type of treat. I have tried them all over the years, and it was not until recently I finally found something she goes gagga over. Bread. I save all those first and last pieces that we will not eat and I hide them in my pockets when going out to the barn. The great thing is that it's cheap, I can hide it in the grocery budget without hubby saying anything!! (He always gave me a hard time about all the carrots) The horses do not mind if it is fresh or drying out a little. I can buy it at any store. I can break it into any size pieces that I want. It is part of our desensitizing program. I take the bread bag out with me. After I let the horses see the bread I will raise my
left arm with bag and shake it. If they want the treat they must approach wile the bag is making tons of noise. It is too the point that my Kiger gelding will come running the minute he hears the bag shaking. He is way too smart for his own good. *Caution must be used as a treat hog may try to bite the bag.
