[RC] The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race/nothing new - Tx TriggerSuzanne posted: >>>This race has never been done before at least in our era, this is the first. Unknowns and never have been done before equate to "adventure". Everyone will be in the same pot with all of the same grips, smiles, tears, rub marks, pain and laughter. It will for me be an experience of a lifetime, and yes, the "Great Adventure on Horseback". <<< Well, not completely true. In 2001, we participated in a 2000 mile ride across the pony express trail from St. Joseph MO, to Virginia City NV. Eight weeks on the road, moving camp every ride day, usually weekends at one spot. 2004 found us again on the Pony Express trail from NV to NE for 1200 miles. Both rides were AERC sanctioned with each day being a 50 mile endurance ride. Back in 1977 was the Great American Horse Race, heading east to West, across the whole country. This is nothing new to endurance riders. But it is getting more attention to non endurance riders, through the public advertising on RFDTV and new papers. many on Ridecamp participated in these rides, and they KNOW what is going to probably happen. And many are staying away, because they have some gut feelings on what things will go wrong in management, and organization. We won't even get in to the many issues of some very non experienced riders giving it a try, without seeking any information ahead of time, and think that Ol Dobbin can go 50 miles a day easy.
