[RC] Arab Auction Eyewitness - rides2farI called Danny Herlong in South Carolina and told him about the auction at Waltersboro. He drove over there today and just gave me the low down. Apparently, the horses were from a farm where the lawyer owner got in some legal trouble and the IRS seized the farm a year ago. The auction man said they'd spent a year getting weight back on the horses before he'd take them to sell. He said they still need weight. He thinks there's 40 or so. At first he thought they looked wild as deer but he said they settled down pretty quick. Pretty exciting trip over I guess. There were only something like 6 with papers...they were the older ones. There was an Arabian show trainer there looking at them and he said some had been bought from a nice farm...maybe "McPherson??" in WV and were nice mares with excellent show lines. He got one out and did the pose and she hit it and he said he guaranteed she'd either been shown or taught to show. Said there was one Saddlebred cross mare that looked so nice he was thinking about buying it to breed for 1/2 Arabs. Danny said quite a few of the horses look 1/2 Saddlebred and argued that they had to be a cross. They guy said, "No they're Arabs" but then the coggins said Arab/Saddlebred on some. He described them as scruffy, but built like "the horses in the magazines"...not a lot of bone, more fine boned, long legged. He said they calmed right down there but he's certain they'll act wild as deer the night of the sale and he's guessing they'll bring under $200. There will be several in a stall, then run through the ring scared so people will be just taking a wild shot. Said you could probably show up with $1000 and get the whole herd if you were crazy enough to want it. He said this is *not* a fancy "Arabian" sale...it's a crossroads sale barn. This community used to have a huge horse slaughter house but it closed down. There was a 5 year old gelding they said was broke, but nobody would get on it. He said he brought it out and it acted like it probably was broke. There were SLEWS of 3 yr. old colts & fillies and no papers. I asked him if he wanted me to post this or keep down his competition and he said, "those horses deserve all the help they can get...tell'em". Danny said one little mare just caught his eye and never took her eyes off him. He fooled with her a little and thinks he'll go back and try to get her...so of you decide to go on his post...let him have her..she picked him. >G< Angie =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
