[RC] #56 - mrsd

I can only think back to what the horses looked like when I made my first trip
to the Tevis to watch. Man their were some really fit but not fat horses that
did really well. Made my first attempt in 1979 and miracle of miracles didn't
finish.

Next attempt was in 1974 and the horse that I had started in 71 finished
without
problems. Was she fat?.. no way. Her dam, who was 16, finished her third trip
in a row and a half sister also finished in excellent condition. It was her
second ride. she had finished a fifty 45 days prior. Were there many horses
that were not well covered with fat that finished? YES.

All three of the above mares showed some rib and I was told by people on the
show circuit that they were obviously too thin to last for 100 miles. Yes they
are more covered in most respects today but a little rib didn't seem to hurt
Witezarif who won

the Tevis six times. I am reminded of the Arab Sheik at
Madison Square Gardens as he presented the champion stallion award being heard
to say," Are you going to eat him." Dick Dawson
