Re: [RC] Query #2: why are low heels bad? - L gin

There is a DISTINCT difference between "Underrun heels" and "low Heels" --they are NOT the same thing!
Underun heels have moved forward and put the structures -out of wack -essentially , because they have either not worn off due to enough exercise and movement and use, and no trimming or improper shoeing techniques.
Low heels OTOH are the norm for wild horses and many trimmed barefoot horses--- the BAREFOOt movement is finding, with research, that the heels are weight bearing along with the whole foot as opposed to furmer thinking that only the outer wall bore the weight.
Over time, usually a year or so, if the horse isn't over fed and over confined, and you remove their shoes their heels will lower.-----
Navicular syndrome is looking more and more like a high heel, lack of use, mechanical problem of the Suspensory ...... and the coffin bone and the digital cushion not developing enough structure when the horse is young to support their weight over time. They are finding the digital cushions are much more developed in wild horses than in domestic horses , alot of the digital cushions being examined in domestic horses are relative to a 200 lb wild colt.......
