Sorry to hear of the runaway. They said we learn best from our own misfortune, but it best to learn from someone else's misfortune. I hate the thought of taking one more decision out of the hands of parents, or joy of accomplishment from a child. However we do live in a country where that child must be wear a seat belt in a car. If that child dies in an accident not wearing one the parent can be charged with Negligent Homicide.


I suspect that was long before the bitless bridle was though of - or at least by that name. Nope I had a grazing bit in the sucker. It would not have mattered what I had - there was no way a 6 yo could out muscle him. He was a pretty good pony. After I recovered fully - about three months (if I remember but it was a while ago) - rode him until I got my first real horse. Of course he had no intention banging me up. If my grandfather had not have seen him I'm not sure they would have found me till morning. He went through the woods and stayed on the edge munching grass not far from where I was so they finally spotted him.

There was a parent charged with negligent homicide a few years back when a father let his kid race an ATV that was too big for the kid to handle. The ATV flipped and killed the kid.

Not only does a child have to wear a seat belt - in most states they have to be in the back in a child restraint seat until 60 pounds and then in a seat belt after that. Like all such laws they are based on what is good for the population as a whole. Is it good bad or indifferent - I don't know? However, if there is an incident as you point out a DA with a set of fangs can make your life pretty miserable.
