RE: [RC] osteoporosis - heidiLack of calcium is the issue, not lack of dairy products. There are lots or reasons that people don't eat dairy, ulcers and acid reflux are one, which is my issue. You can get enough calcium from leafy green vegetables (spinach, some lettuces, broccoli, collard and mustard greens), dried fruit and nuts, and tofu, among other foods. Dairy calcium is just easier for the body to use. Sure, there is calcium in the plant sources that you listed. But it is more than just a matter of dairy calcium being "easier to use"--it is a matter of whether the plant calcium is absorbed at all. Often only a fraction of the calcium in the plant sources can be absorbed, so one is easily led to the false assumption that one is getting "enough." If you can't eat dairy products for some reason, it pays to take a calcium supplement that has good bioavailability to make sure you're covered, no matter how much broccoli and spinach you eat...
