[RC] More questions about sweaty shaggy horses. - Sharon Levasseur

I live in Maine and this is the first winter that I've ever pasture-boarded a
horse. I'm feeling a little unsure of myself.

Zephyr is not blanketed so he has a very thick winter coat. If I were to follow
the barn owner's suggestion I would never get him out of a walk from November
through April... she thinks it's bad for him to get sweaty in the winter... but
then he'd be fatter than a prize hog!

I've been riding four times a week and he usually gets REALLY sweaty. I have
been waiting until he's cool (but not dry), putting him back in the field with
a fleece liner under a mid-weight turnout blanket, and asking her to remove it
the following morning (if he's dry). He does have a 3-sided shelter, and at
night he has it all to himself.

Is this sufficient, or should he not be put back in the field AT ALL when wet?
If that's the case I fear I may need to clip him and put a blanket on for the
rest of the winter. And I've always wondered... if you clip the belly don't
you then have to buy a *bellyband* turnout blanket?? I have enough goldurn
blankets, I don't need to spend money on another one. :-p

Thanks,
-Sharon L. & Zephyr
