Re: [RC] LD Issue - Diane TrefethenHi Sarah - welcome to posting on Ridecamp! My first bit of advice is to keep a salt shaker handy while you read posts on any of the "touchy" issues. Secondly, keep in mind that, for the most part, the people on both sides of the LD debate are sincerely interested in what is best for the sport and our wonderful equines. One side thinks placings and a speed-based BC encourage riding too fast, a trap even experienced riders doing 50s sometimes fall into, and the other says that's not so and that everyone doing LD should have the same opportunities as riders doing 50s.> Anyway, I saw somewhere about Multidays not having LD's? Were you referring to the post that expressed concern about Multi-days not offering BCs? It was referring to the fact that some RMs who put on Multi-day rides want to encourage the MULTI part so instead of offering a BC for each day, only offer it to those who complete all the days of the ride. This is allowed under AERC rules but the BC will not be recognized by AERC. > I cant seem to find much on training, I just > go with how I think my horse should do.. and I know I dont push as hard > as I should but how do you KNOW what to do when you have no one to help > you? It is easier to know where you are in your training when you ride with someone who is experienced. Failing that, what you need to have happen is that you, more than those with mentors, must learn to read your horse. When you go to get your mare, if she runs off and is hard to catch, is that because she's just like that or is it something more? Maybe she is sore and knows you want to ride (the halter is a dead giveaway). Or maybe you are doing more training than she is ready for and she is tired of it. The same issues arise out on the trail. Is she dogging it because that is her way of going or because she hurts somewhere or because she doesn't have the energy to do better? Some horses get bored conditioning and then act sluggish. Arabs are famous for stumbling at the walk on conditioning rides. However, when they get to a real ride, the dynamics change. Often that quiet, pocket pony turns into a raging lunatic at the start of its first few rides. You said that you completed two 15 mile rides and assuming your mare was fine AND assuming that you either have been conditioning all along since then or will have at least 8 weeks this spring of the same level of conditioning as last year, then you will be ready to start an LD or a slow 50 if 50s are your goal. > I dont care if you treat me like im a newbie.. Heck I am, > but if you treat me Like im stupid, and riding a ride thats nothing, Im > not going to stay in the sport, but if you treat me with respect and > help me... Some people feel that some posts from other riders show a lack of respect. Whenever you see such a complaint, go back and read the post that the person is complaining about. Is the original poster being DISrespectful or just DISagreeing? Some people cannot tell the difference. You should make up your own mind whether the original poster was expressing a different opinion or truly being disrespectful. Imagine you have a friend who has taken a strong stand on something. You disagree with her but you can still admire her for voicing her point of view. Even if you argue with her and think she is dead wrong, that doesn't mean you don't respect HER. Good luck and have a wonderful time on the trail. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
