RE: [RC] Electricity 101 - Jannelle Wilde & Adam FalkOne thing that is not being explained in any of the emails so far is the reason for the different number of prongs on each plug. A real 220v plug has 4 prongs two of them carry a hot 120 volts each one is a neutral and one is a ground. If your trailer is equipped with a 220 volt plug they may have hooked one to the ac/heat and one to the plug inside. If you get an adaptor to convert it to a regular 3 prong 'edison' type of plug you may not have enough power to run the AC. Sometimes they will use this type of connector but only hookup one of the hot legs. With a configuration of this type a conversion plug should work fine. What you left out of your question was what type of plug you have on your trailer and how many breakers there are. If your trailer has a regular plug then you can purchase an adaptor that would allow you to connect to a 220 circuit by using one hot leg, the ground and the neutral. If you decide to make this up yourself be very careful!! As was mentioned before if you hook it up wrong you can cause a great deal of damage. I hope that this helps. Each is backed by their trailer company guy and each firmly believes they are right and their opinions are the opposite of each others. If I have a small 2 horse trailer with a small roof top air/heat unit and one outlet in the trailer can I plug into a 110 outlet safely? Can I plug into a 220 outlet safely?
