A couple years ago my friend’s horse was plagued for several
months with internal abscesses. I also knew of a horse that had an abcess in the lower leg & remained lame for over 2
years. Neither had used antibiotics. The material I’ve read indicates antibiotics
may be necessary for internal abscesses or abscesses of the limbs. I’ve
only dealt with one case, external, no antibiotics, kept the horse in a 12x12
until it quit draining then sanitized the area. That was
about 5 or 6 years ago & haven’t had another case since. Neighbors
within a.5 miles have/had cases this fall, I’m keeping my fingers crossed
that the flies are gone now & won’t be spreading it around.
I hope your horse recovers soon.

I do know that this can
last a long time, but we are going on month 5 of "pigeon
fever". I am not sure I really think that this is a pigeon fever
problem. So before I freak out on the vet and haul my
horse thru some pretty ugly roads this time of year, does any one have any
experience or recommendations.
Thanks
