Re: [RC] Bees get a bad rap??//Tongue Swelling - Beverley H. Kane, MDTitle: Re: [RC] Bees get a bad rap??//Tongue Swelling Barbara,The tongue swelling that results from a bee sting (or any allergic reaction) is only worrisome if it’s part of a generalized reaction to a sting at a distant location or to something that was ingested. In that case, tongue swelling can be accompanied/followed by laryngeal edema—swelling of the back of the throat that can result in a respiratory arrest plus/minus anaphylactic shock. It is not the tongue per se that blocks the airway. So getting stung right on the tongue would usually not be worrisome wrt breathing. Personally, I think every RM should have a bee sting kit at rides in YJ territory. Shoot. No more RC for me this AM. Gotta do my medical informatics work on ICD-9 and CPT codes—literally. I put a bite of steak into my mouth and immediately felt a sharp pain. A YJ was still attached to the steak. It hurt, and my tongue swelled and became numb, but it did not block my breathing as a couple of worried riders sitting next to me thought might happen. _____________________________________ Beverley Kane, MD Horsensei Equine-Assisted Learning & Therapy Woodside, CA http://www.horsensei.com See Stanford Medical School "Medicine & Horses" on NBC-TV http://www.nbc11.com/news/10339680/detail.html
