Re: [RC] newbie wants to know...... - rides2farMy criteria in DECREASING order of importance: 1) Comfortable for the horse (i.e. It fits!) 2) comfortable for the rider 3) Light in weight (given the two criteria above) I'd add to that, a saddle that puts you in the correct position to ride well...which will contribute a lot more to the comfort of the horse than a few pounds difference in weight. I've seen a featherweight rider sore a horse's back bad in a saddle that the horse had had no issues carrying a middleweight in. The featherweight rode well in a saddle that fit her, but the saddle was too big for her she didn't ride well in it.
