When I was 13 through 16, I used to ride to the beach
and swim my horse in the ocean. It seems to me that could be quite
dangerous, currents being what they are. Becoming a mother made me more
cautious, but I still managed to keep from saying "Be careful!" all the
time like my parents did. Our three daughters grew up successfully and
with a great sense of adventure. Kids ARE just as tough today, but various
government agencies want to protect them from themselves...kids can't even
get a job when they are young. My husband was working construction with
his dad at 14 and joined the Merchant Marine when he was 16. My
grandfather apprenticed to a blacksmith when he was 13. I suggested to my
daughter that maybe her 13 year old son could work with his dad this past summer
(dad is a professional tree faller), but she told me he would not be allowed to
do so. All this "protection" has to do with litigation.
It's funny the things we did as kids we would never want kids to do
today. I remember jumping on an arab mare bareback with a halter
and going down the road for a ride. When I got back I was told she
wasn't "broke". PP

Very good point, Stacey. When I was a kid, my
friend & I rode green horses all the time. Some of our friends could
afford well trained horses, but they never did learn as much from them as we
did. Neither of us ever got hurt either. Maybe kids just aren't as tough these
days?
