[RC] [RC] Stifle surgery - Lucy Chaplin TrumbullAmy Whelan:> > My friend who boards her horse with me, is having stifle locking problems and the vet suggests clipping the tendons....has anyone had this done on a horse that they compete? I have one that does it occasionally but I never had surgery, hers seems more frequent.<< Amy I have a mare who has this problem - she was sound at rides, but not very comfortable and got *very* crabby about anyone going near her stifles (tried to kick the vet). We went to see a great vet in Nevada (Dr Gardner) who deals with lots of endurance horses. After checking her out and x-raying her, he recommended "blistering" rather than clipping the tendons (which I know is the regular practice). He said that he'd seen lots of horses turn up with arthritis a few years later if the tendons were cut. Another thing that was mentioned was that you need to ride the horse enthusiastically post-surgery to make sure that the tendons heal up in a "trotting down the road" configuration, rather than a "standing around in a stall" configuration. So far, I haven't gotten around to having the (minor?) surgery done yet - just due to circumstances rather than design. As soon as she's up and being ridden again, I will probably do it - maybe next spring. He said the surgery was ~$250.
