Re: [RC] weed free - Sisu West Ranch"It is irrelevant if the seeds can grow after being eating - your hay pile sitting in the wind will blow the seeds before they are consumed. I think it is important " My personal opinion is that the hay brought to wild places is the real good reason for the weed free regulations. Unfortunately, as with much in out country, the easy explanation "horse poop is bad, causes weeds" is used rather than explaining how most weeds actually get into wild places. I did note that last summer, there was a mention in our paper that the Forest Service fire camps had folk with high pressure washers cleaning fire equipment and vehicles every night to help limit the spread of weeds. My horses are fed only the highest quality, weed free Montana Grass and grass hay all year around. It is a bit of work, but my hay field is certified for two years now.
