RE: [RC] What do you think when you are coming off? - spiritwood@xxxxxxxxx

WELL! At last month's NC ride my only thought when my horse was suddenly
bowled out from under me was "keep rolling, keep rolling"! We had been
somewhere around mid pack so when we departed company there were 40 some
horses zooming up from behind us in the darkness! It was like a
slow-moving auto accident. Lots of bouncing lights, glow sticks, and the
everwhelming thundering of horses coming up the gravel road. I popped up
when I hit a bush is someone's front yard and then jogged up the road
asking everyone I saw to catch my horse if they saw him and tie him to
something. Thankfully people like John Crandall and Amy Cieri took the
time to do just that so we were reunited a mile or so down the road.
We didn't get to finish although we did ride up to the top of Edinburgh gap
where the cumulative effect of the hit and then falling on the asphalt road
caught up to us. Bruised and sore horse but is sure could have been worse!
Don't worry, we will be back!

With me it's almost lays the trotting 90 mph, slam on the brakes and
break left that gets me. I'm just cruising along and I suppose my first
thought is, "Where's my horse?" Strange feeling when you're still hanging
in the air and he's suddenly gone. My most common injury is the rope burn
between the fingers where I hang onto the reins. I generally fly over his
head and land squatting facing him in the trail. He runs backwards
because a person just flew out of the sky and landed in front of him and
that's shocking. I get a rope burn because I hang onto the reins when he
does it. I know I'm kinda known for breaking the collarbone but those
aren't from me falling off. Those are from him flippin with me. That's
when I think, "Where's my horse's head?"
