[RC] Safe Containment - Spring Ties - Lucy Chaplin Trumbull

Barbara McCrary:
I have never tried a Hi-Tie. They look great, but what happens if a horse freaks out like in our experience? Or what happens if you have a horse that pulls back really hard? Can they break or pull off the trailer? (We had a horse once who would pull back, almost sit down and would not quit until something broke.)

I don't have a Hi-Tie, I have a Spring Tie and have had two horses pull back and sit down in the manner you describe with no injury to horse, tie, or trailer (in an earlier incident, one of the horses did bend a "normal" ring on the trailer when she was tied to it).

I think the "boinginess" of the spring-type overhead
ties encourages the horse to give eventually - it
doesn't have that unyielding feel that some horses
fight against.

(Thinking of the older-style high ties that are just
an arm bolted to the side of the trailer, I am less
confident that they wouldn't sheer off and cause a
big wreck. That said, I have no experience with them,
so am just guessing).

I bought my Spring Tie after listening to the dealer
at the AERC convention tell me about an incident where
a horse was left alone at the trailer after his buddy
went out on an endurance ride. The leftee had a hissy
fit and was flipping out. A guy across the way sat and
watched him and said at times the Spring Tie was almost
flat against the side of the trailer. Eventually, the
horse got tired of fighting and settled down.
