Re: [RC] Y'all IS the plural - Jo Ann KnightI grew up on a cotton farm in the San Joaquin Valley outside Fresno. My dad s family was all from Mississippi and Y'all was used plural. The only time I heard Y'all used when talking to one person was when that persons' family was included in the "y'all come on over later" meaning you and your family come over later, or some such. I imagine this was a California twist on usage, or maybe was common in the part of Mississippi they came from. So not sure how "new" this is cause that was back in the 40's and 50's and 60's that I was around the family that much.---Jo Ann k s swigart said: ..However, since language evolves, and there appear to be a lot of people who are using y'all when they are talking to just one person (this has got to be something new???), I cannot say it is "wrong" to use y'all in the singular...but it would be historically/etimilogically inaccurate. kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
