Re: [RC] FW: E coli in horse manure? - Diane TrefethenMike Sherrell wrote:So how unsafe is it to ride on the edges of spinach and lettuce fields? I wouldn't worry about it. In surfing the Internet, I encountered references to studies showing that an equine fecal sample contained E. coli O157:H7 Almost every time this reference was accompanied by reference to positives from 2 dog samples and a pooled bird sample. From: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/ceah/cei/taf/emerginganimalhealthissues_files/ecoupdat.pdf#search=%22horse%20%22E.%20coli%20O157%3AH7%22%22 A study was conducted in the Pacific Northwest to examine the occurrence of non-bovine sources of E. coli O157:H7 on the farm. All domestic and wild animals on 6 dairies and 6 feedlots were sampled. Samples that were culture positive for E. coli O157:H7 included 1 horse, 2 dogs, 1 pooled bird sample and 2 pooled fly trap samples. All rodent samples were negative. It could well be that most if not all the references to horses harboring E. coli O157:H7 are to the same study! If true, that would be one positive horse fecal sample out of the hundreds of thousands of samples taken. If there is just one positive study sample, it could be false, cross contaminated in the lab, in the field, mislabeled or any number of other NON-infectious possibilities. In fact, with just one, the probability that the positive was NOT because a horse was infected goes up. After all, if horses can harbor E. coli O157:H7 as well as say sheep, surely there would be more than just one positive sample to cite. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
