Re: [RC] cancer in horses. what do you know about it? - Jo Ann KnightMelinda I see other's encouraging you. Let me add my part. I have a mare I am now riding, recently did a trail ride and hope to reach LD levels next year or after. Have been unable to ride this horse since summer of 1998, three vets and a trainer and several massage therapists all advised that while she may become comfortable and live long, she would likely never recover from the mental trauma and memories of the pain experienced while being ridden. It was a long hard road to even determine it was pain and injury and not attitude. The short of this story is that last October I put her in boarding while I went off to get a new knee. A person I'd been hearing about for two years, Cindy Schleuss, was said to do wonders with horses vets gave up on. I had my doubts, but after the third independent recommend I decided maybe it was time to give it a try. Well, you know the end of this story. She is learning riding can be fun again and enjoying it. She always enjoyed trails and seeing what was around the corner and standing at vista points was as interesting to her as it was to me. I know this isn't health/cancer type issue, my point is don't lose hope and don't give up. Had I given up, she'd still be retired, unhappy at not getting on trails and I'd be trying to find a safe horse.
