Re: [RC] cancer in horses. what do you know about it? - Diane Trefethen

How do you know it is a cancer? If your vet said so, read the write up on his bill to see exactly what he diagnosed. If it isn't clear, ask him to write it all down so you will know precisely what you are facing.

I have a gelding who at 7 developed a cyst in his right nostril. My vet biopsied it and the results came back: mass cell tumor. I investigated various possibilities, all really expensive with absolutely no guarantee on their efficacy. With so little to encourage me, I decided to let nature take its course, let him live out his remaining days (expected something like 9-18 months) running loose on a big mountain pasture and I started looking for another horse. I found one and during the vetting, I mentioned to the vet that the reason I was getting another horse was because my 8 yr old had had a mass cell tumor. He asked if I had said "mass cell tumor", I said yes and he allowed that he'd seen those quite a bit in young horses, that they came, disappeared (my geldings had) and were never seen again.

He is now 10 and except for the dings from the "replacement" horse, just fine.

It is really hard for us olders to condition two horses :)
