RE: [RC] timing of gelding - heidi

It is rare to have a baby that needs hosing--in part due to the smaller size of the incision as well as of the testicles and related anatomy, and in part due to the fact that if they are on pasture with mom, she tends to keep them moving.

Fly season may be an issue--depending on your whereabouts and circumstances.

Proud-cut colts are indeed ones in which some part of the relevant anatomy is left behind--however, not the vas deferens (it goes all the way up the "cord" and is literally just a tube, hence no hormone-producing capabilities) but rather the tail of the epididymis, which is attached to the testicle by a ligament, and which can easily pull loose and be the length of the testicle away from the testicle as a result.  The old cowboys call it "the button"--you've got to get "the button..."

Seems it would be important to be able to check  and hose the wound so colt should be halter broke.  One might want to wait until fly season is past.  What about the problem of 'proud cut'? Causes?  I wonder if it could be caused by some of the vas deferens being left during the gelding?
