RE: [RC] [RC] Newbie conditioning question - Ranelle Rubin

When I was first conditioning Bogus Thunder, Hal and Ann Hall's horse, Ann taught me to chose the biggest hill that I could find, that I could ride to at least once a week. I was to ride the horse to the top at a walk or trot, depending on the steepness of the hill, but always at the same pace. I was to chose a spot at the top, get off, and make note of how long it took the horse to recover to 60 BPM. The goal here is to be able to eliminate variables. I kept a record of temp, humididty, pace and length of ride prior to arriving at the test hill. I always made sure the horse was well rested just before climbing the hill. This really helped us decide when he was ready for his first 50.

For those of you who live in Auburn, we used the Pig Farm trail which comes out at the top of the canyon near Cool.

Hope this helps.

Now that I have a saddle that fits my horse, I am going to start conditioning for our debut in the spring. But, I've only been doing 5-7 mile rides, mostly walking, some trotting. My horse acts dead tired at the 5 mile mark. Do I need to continue these short rides untill she doesn't act tired before bumping her up to 8 or 10 miles? She is 6yo BTW, and only under saddle for the past 6 months.
