RE: [RC] OT-Big win for horses in the House! - Melissa AlexanderWhy is it that people love to jump on the bandwagon against horse slaughter, but I don't see them screaming about animal shelters putting down thousands of dogs and cats across the country on a daily basis. At least horses are able to be used as a food source to feed someone. Wellll... Actually there have been huge cries, which is why there are so many no-kill shelters and why euthanasia of shelter animals has become more humane. The shelters themselves are, by and large, comfortable, and there are often volunteers who care for and love the animals right up until death. And there's no transport issue, nor any issue with giving humane vet care (or immediate euthanasia) to the dogs and cats who need it because they aren't going to be used for human consumption. Also the United States has over the past twenty years or so made a HUGE push to control the number of unwanted animals. Spaying and neutering is very, very common among cats and dogs -- to the point that people who don't choose to spay and neuter are criticized and pressured to do so. Have they fixed the problem? No, but there have been changes and improvements. Lots of them.
