[RC] Namibia - wild animals - Stephanie Teeter

In transit now. spent 2 days and one night at Okapuka - a huge private game park, incredible. At the Walvis ride I met a woman Ingebruk (sp?) a transplanted Norwegian who came here with here husband 9 years ago to start the horse safari businees at the park. He left, she's still here making a go of it. Hard working and spirited and gutsy. She owns a piece of land in the park, has 30+ arabian horses, and does horse safaris into the park.  ( www.okapuka.com is her website).  We went riding yesterday - saw giraffe, springbok, gemsbok (orynx), wildebeast, hartebeast, several other game animals whose names I can't recall, white rhino (and we got close enough to them that a charge was looking likely - so a hasty retreat). zebra, crocodiles, jackals... all from horseback, incredible. This morning we took Chip (the rover) into the mountains - fantastic scenery, grazing herds of mountain zebra, oryx, etc etc. (I'm already scheming to organize a ride there next year :)

Mike picked me up today, a quick tour of Windhoek - capital city - 220,000 people - bright, clean, modern. Lunch at his ranch (a 100 year old farm that he recently purchased) - then off to the east to visit some of the arabian breeders and see their programs. There's only phoneline internet here (at best) and maybe not even that - so I don't know if I'll be checking in regularly, or at all :)

beautiful country - Namibia.
