Re: [RC] RHR in youngsters - Horse ElinoreL.Tonsor

Actually, as a UMECRA competitive rider and ride manager, I don't like to
see you use the CTR initial for our rides. We call it Competitive Riding in
the Midwest, and it is very different from NATRC Competitive Trail Riding.

I made up my mind that I wasn't going to get into this discussion, because
we stopped having it in the Midwest years ago. Many of our top endurance
riders (Jan Worthington, Joe Mattingley, Candy Barbo, Joyce Mocilan, Lori
Windows to name a few) in the Midwest ride Endurance on Saturday and
Competitive on Sunday. They see the advantages and fun in both.

I too take exception to the "average" term used. We do 50 mile competitive
rides in the Midwest, so when the endurance horse is getting crewed for,
sloshing jugs, water buckets at road crossings, the competitive horse must
trot right on past this luxurary and get their water and sloshing from water
found naturally on the trail. We do 3 day 100's, 2 day 100's, 2-day 75's,
and Shore to Shore has a 5 day 175 mile competitive ride. And speaking of
"average", Lori Window's Mule, Shaman of the Wallowas, just completed 15,000
miles of competition in July. I believe 14,000 of those miles have been
logged in Competitive Riding. Wouldn't it be something if that was
"average" for the endurance horse.

"... But wrong to be measuring level of condition, care in riding, and
fatigue based on absolute HR numbers...."

At least in UMECRA CTR, pulse is only one parameter on the score sheet. It
just happens that it is relatively objective and easily influenced by
training and riding so much discussion centers around the pulse scores.

The other parameters include:

Any muscle soreness upon palpation.
Heat in any joint. (rarely seen)
Objective score of how tired the horse is. (this is the most like a horse
show)
Lameness. Detailed scoring. You can loose up to 20 points before you get
to the grade 2 level that causes a pull in endurance. The horse is watched
on circles both ways.
Tack and Galls. Just like endurance, but points for things that would allow
completion.
Manners. Rarely used unless a horse takes a kick at the vet.

Yes, I would rather compete in a 50 mile Endurance ride, but CTR is a good
sport. The participants are good horsemen and women. The average CTR horse
is better trained than many endurance horses. You do not see horses that
are uncontrolable at the start.

I take exception to the assertion that a CTR horse is rewarded for being
"average". While it is true that a horse that has an above average heart
rate is at a disadvantage, the horse that has an exceptionally low resting
heart rate is at an advantage. A horse that is an exceptionally sound and
correct mover is rewarded over an average horse.

If Endurance riders who live in regions without a strong CTR program, (I am
thinking of a program like UMECRA., which requires a ~6..5 mph pace and
does not judge "horsemanship"), would have an opportunity to spend a season
(5 to 10 rides) competing in CTR's in addition to Endurance many of them
would have to admit that both they and their horses learned a lot.
