Re: [RC] RHR in youngsters - Sisu West Ranch"... But wrong to be measuring level of condition, care in riding, and fatigue based on absolute HR numbers...."At least in UMECRA CTR, pulse is only one parameter on the score sheet. It just happens that it is relatively objective and easily influenced by training and riding so much discussion centers around the pulse scores. The other parameters include: Any muscle soreness upon palpation. Heat in any joint. (rarely seen) Objective score of how tired the horse is. (this is the most like a horse show) Lameness. Detailed scoring. You can loose up to 20 points before you get to the grade 2 level that causes a pull in endurance. The horse is watched on circles both ways. Tack and Galls. Just like endurance, but points for things that would allow completion. Manners. Rarely used unless a horse takes a kick at the vet. Yes, I would rather compete in a 50 mile Endurance ride, but CTR is a good sport. The participants are good horsemen and women. The average CTR horse is better trained than many endurance horses. You do not see horses that are uncontrolable at the start. I take exception to the assertion that a CTR horse is rewarded for being "average". While it is true that a horse that has an above average heart rate is at a disadvantage, the horse that has an exceptionally low resting heart rate is at an advantage. A horse that is an exceptionally sound and correct mover is rewarded over an average horse. If Endurance riders who live in regions without a strong CTR program, (I am thinking of a program like UMECRA., which requires a ~6..5 mph pace and does not judge "horsemanship"), would have an opportunity to spend a season (5 to 10 rides) competing in CTR's in addition to Endurance many of them would have to admit that both they and their horses learned a lot.
