Re: [RC] Switching from green grass to hay before a ride - Diane TrefethenHi Linda,$22/bale is outrageous! They are asking and getting it because SOMEBODIES are touting it as the best thing in the world for horses. Timothy is very common in the Northeast and I believe is running between $3 and $6/small bale (40#-50#) so unless your local feed store is having it shipped from New England, $22 is "what the market will bear". HIGH quality oat will serve your purpose, ie, getting away from Bermuda and not feeding straight alfalfa. Here is a list of growers in the (909) area code: http://www.gy.com/biz/111940/909.htm BTW - for those in California, you can substitute any California telephone area code in the above link and get a listing for that area code. Here is a listing of feed sources in So Cal from http://www.stable.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Site.FeedSearch I would start with the *growers* closest to you. See if you can get a squeeze or small truck load delivered. If not, and you find a good price, you can hitch your trailer up and go pick up the hay yourself. 2-horse straight load can hold about 14 bales and a full size pickup 8 bales with a shell on, 14-16 bales without. Look for "sweet" oat or any grass you like. Here an example to give you a beta. I don't expect you to go to Gilroy :) High quality red oat hay at G&K growers in Gilroy is $7.95/bale. Their TOP (for very hard keepers) is $11.75/bale. Top quality red oat feeds like a dream - ask Maryben or anyone else familiar with Almaden Valley red oat. Good luck in your hay search. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
