last year i took a bad fall a few days before a 50
miler. so, on Saturday morning i started out riding in pain. the
pain caused me to be a more-than-usual clumsy rider, and i signaled my horse to
vear right when i meant left. well, after a looooooonnnnnnngggggg
attempt to stay in the saddle, i came off. i landed on a big rock and
seriously injured my tailbone. i also sprained my left ankle. but,
of course, i am an endurance rider so up i climbed and continued down the trail
to the next vet check.
well, word got out that i had taken a bad fall...i had
to get a youngster to trot my horse out for me. when word spread that i
was riding hurt, four yes four different people came up to me and offered
Vicodin.
four!!!!! and those were just the folks i new
pretty well.
so, i'd guess that there are many riders out there who
have pain killers just for when they need them or when someone else
does.
i do believe that i had my fall because i was riding
hurt in the first place. maybe i'da been riding better if i'da had those
Vicodin to at the start. i dunno.
Well it would get the old foggies out of the way so the young
can get up the trail without us being in their way or remiding them of how
it will be or can be when they get their!
I for one love to
compete with youngsters at computer games I am familiar with that uses fast
action. I can sometimes beat their (*&l off! They really
don't think "old people" have good reflexes. We don't, not like
we want to have anyway!
The sport would be full of teens and
20 somethings and that is it! And it sure wouldn't allow the yoiung
ones with injriies or illnesses like arthriits, and the such to compete
either.
It is one thing to need to medicate to the edge of being
able to get around and another to medicate to the point your vision is
messed up or you brain is truely zonked! People drink and think they
can drive too! Again, use of good judgement, keeping aware of what
your using and what it does to you and knowing limits. Otherwise if
you use a narcotic and can't make rational judgements and react fast
enough to control your horse then don't use it and ride. Or lower
your dose. Safe is the word I am getting at and some people are not
illegally enhanced by the use of one vicodin a day or thru a number of
hours. They might be if they used 2 or more and then the
consequences could be deadly to the horse and rider if they hit a spot that
challenged their abilities at that point. Jo

From: Barbara McCrary The exact words I was searching for to
answer a previous post on the subject. If anti-inflammatories and
pain-killers are banned from riders' use, this whole sport would collapse.
And to what purpose, I cannot imagine.
