On the other hand the rider chose for herself to make that jump. She made the choice - she paid the price. The horse didn't have a say. The horse is an unwitting partner in our activities. Just because a rider in any discipline choses to play macho, jump the highest jump, run the fastest mile do a "tough" endurance ride, etc. doesn't mean it is in the best interest of the horse to do so.

This is what I think separates endurance riding from many of the equine sports that "eat horses" is the AERC recognizes that and has provisions in place to protect the horse from ourselves. If the AERC ever loses site of that I suspect there are many people that will no longer be interested.
