Re: [RC] colic clarification - Ramy JishaBarbara,I am so sorry. I know how difficult it is to deal with such senseless loss. I think God must have used a commitee to design the horse, that or he was practicing for something else. Their guts are just designed to get them in trouble. Just as the small intestine can twist on itself, the large colon can flip within the abdomen, either 180 or 360 degrees. These torsions tend to happen at feeding time, which leads me to believe that the stimulation of motility in the colon by the presence of feed in the stomach has something to do with it. (the fancy scientific name is the gastro-colic reflex) In the same way, though the small intestine can twist randomly, but it seems to occur more often when dehydration and altered blood flow (such as for cooling) change the motility of the small intestine. Treating colic can be one of the most frustrating, but also one of the most rewarding things depending on the outcome. You just never know which one you are going to get. And euthanizing horses is one of the most difficult things I do. I don't think I have ever done one that I didn't get choked up, no matter how much it was the right thing to do. Everybody go hug your horse Ramy __________________________________________________
