Re: [RC] colic clarification - Joe LongI lost a beautiful endurance prospect, the only horse I ever had born to a mare I owned and that I raised from a foal, as a two-year-old to a twisted intestine. We hadn't even begun riding him at all yet, only some light ground work, and one day we found him dead in his pasture. The autopsy showed a twisted intestine. I've had people say that if a horse colics at an endurance ride, it must be the fault of the stress of the ride -- and imply that the rider is at fault. I tell them the story of a mare who coliced at one of my rides, and almost died, needing heroic efforts by the ride vets to save her. I ask them if it was something the rider could have prevented. Then I tell them that this horse never even had a saddle on at the ride, she was a fit endurance horse that was brought there (a short distance from home) to be available in case we needed to go searching for a lost rider. She coliced in camp. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.chiprider.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
