[RC] Ugly skin stuff - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Debbie Whaley whaleydj@xxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== It could be hives from a reaction to something. (bug bites, vaccines, food, etc.) Years ago I had an old pony with the same symptoms- the vet gave her a shot of cortisone and had me shave the larger spots and wash all of them with betadine soap to remove the crusts. He said it was a reaction to hay that was too rich and high in protein. The pony was on winter pasture but was also sharing my new yearling's dairy quality alfalfa...separating her at feeding time so she had only grass hay resolved the hives. My horses sometimes get a few spots in the fall when I first start feeding hay if I feed straight alfalfa. Since I started feeding mostly grass hay, they haven't gotten the bumps. As for how to treat the bumps now, I've had good luck spraying them with Schreiners Herbal solution. It seems to dry them out, reduce the itching, and help them heal a little faster. Chlorhexidine shampoo works really well, too, especially if they've gotten infected. Hope this helps and you're back on the trail soon!
