Re: [RC] Horse Management in Excessive Heat - Maryanne GabbaniWelcome to our summers. I don't think that the temperature has been below 90 F since sometime in June (and 90 is a nice day) and I have a great admiration for Arabs as desert horses. Summer is our rest period here. Horses get ridden early in the morning or late at night. Recently four women friends and I decided to make the most of the full moon and ride to the pyramids stables in Giza and back (about 35 km). We stopped there and had a beer, offered the horses some water but they weren't interested, and then we rode back. It was a brilliant ride and now I think that next month I want to leave about 7 pm and ride to the lake at Dahshur by moonliight. We took our time, so it was 1 am when we got back, but what a great way to spend the night. The day was intolerable.During the day the horses have shade which they occasionally use, but mostly they have a good steady breeze from the north. We've left the hose running in the sand paddock and they play in the water, or we've left them out in the garden to play in the sprinklers....10 horses angling for a couple of rainbirds is pretty funny. But all in all, they are doing MUCH better than I am. I start my day with electrolytes and top up in the afternoon. Keeps me from running right into the ground.
