Re: [RC] Making your own PVC Panels - Milinda Ellis

I ran electricity on the inside of mine and they worked great -- but then, my horses think they're bulldozers... (or kangaroos).

I used schedule 40 PVC, old leftover galvanized waterpipe (from the water well) that was smaller diameter.  It was strong enough to drive with a post driver but small enough for electric insulators to fit.  I bungied the PVC sections together with a piece of galvanized pipe at each end (those anchored the PVC panels) but the insulators were long enough that if the wind got up, the PVC part wouldn't touch the hot wire.

I made my horizontal sections too long to be practical in hauling.  Next time I do this (or maybe here shortly), I'm goign to cut a section out of each panel and then glue in a coupler so they'll be shorter.  I'd love to have a bracket on the side of the trailer for hauling these but alas, that won't happen anytime soon.

Well I had a 2 full PVC corrals...in pieces that I'd have been happy to
give you a good deal on. >g< My husband built us a full PVC corral out of
2" pipes. A friend made a full corral copying ours. They eventually gave
me theirs and out of both corrals there were maybe 2 unbroken panels last
time I remember seeing them. The PVC became brittle as it got older. I'm
not sure if exposure to sun does it or what but what wouldn't have
broken it the first year broke it easily the 3rd year. At first we tried
bungy cording it tight together at each intersection of panels, but they
stil shifted too much. We eventually had to drive stakes in the ground,
lower the panel down over the stake, and duct tape them all to heck to
each other. Probably used 3 or 4 dollars worth of duct tape every time we
set it up, then all the panels ended up goey from it. At night *I didn't
sleep well* I would lay there and hear the panels popping as Kaboot
rubbed his head on it and the entire corral would crackle & pop. The last
time I used it he just put his head through it and tossed his head and it
broke the panel in half.

What finally did it in was when I stacked it on the truck kinda high,
turned in my driveway up a hill and they all went off the truck and legs
to panels broke all over the place. They were awkward to haul, a pain to
set up, and not that secure for a horse who saw grass he couldn't reach.
If you make a set, it would be a good idea to run electricity around the
inside. I wish I had the money we spent on materials to buy a good metal
corral.
