The only FEI ride I ever participated in was the World Cup in 1988, where I was proud to be selected to be on the U.S. team. ... Oops, I should have said "as an FEI entrant." I rode the Ft. Howes 100 last week and enjoyed it immensely (even though I didn't finish -- I fell victim to EIMR, Ego Induced Mental Retardation*). Jan Stevens and family put on one hell of a good event, in some beautiful country. * The reason I didn't finish: Sanshsra hasn't had enough conditioning this year to run "up front" in that field in a 100. I had planned to start at a speed of 8MPH and re-evaulate as the day went on. When so many people moved out ahead of me, and I found myself riding along with friends I hadn't seen in years, I decided that "Ah, we can handle 10 MPH for a while." Well, we averaged 10 MPH for 40 miles. The result was that Sanshra was out of gas at 65 miles, so I walked into the 68-mile vet check and pulled, rider option. As I explained to Kat when I got there, "At the moment I have a horse that is tired, but not in metabolic distress. If I continue I will have a horse in metabolic distress. That distress could be career-ending; it could even be life-ending." End of story. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.chiprider.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
