[RC] how many endurance riders shoe and trim their own horses? - Barb PeckI learned to trim in the late 60's.. spending several weeks trimming with a farrier in high school. The in the 90's spent a week with another farrier, just for fun. I've trimmed my own horses off and on for a long time. Currently, I have a retired horse and a young horse, and I've been trimming both of them for the last several years. A barefoot trim is not the same as a hoof prepped for a shoe.. And I just saw too many farriers trimming bare feet exactly the same as if they were preparing it for a shoe (mainly taking way too much sole out). SO, when my horses don't have shoes, I trim them. I have a good farrier when I'm ready to shoe the young horse. I wish I had learned to shoe though... While I realize everyone has to make a living.. it's just gotten so expensive. And I guess I shouldn't complain - because I know we're probably in the middle of the scale of what it costs for 4 shoes ($125.00).
