Re: [RC] Sunday - Maryanne Gabbani

All of this went back to the illustrious Dr. Q blaming the days of the week on the Egyptians. Since not too many of them are around to defend themselves, that's cool. BUT, the days of the week as we know them come from the European languages and the ancient Egyptians didn't speak any of those. In fact the modern Egyptians don't either except as a hobby or an extra skill. Something that most people don't know is that Egypt isn't actually named Egypt at all. Around here it's called Misr (sort of pronounced "moss-rrr"). That's what Egyptians call Egypt. Egypt also functions on a day to day basis on three different calendars: the European calendar so that the ex-pats and visiting business types can make appointments, the Islamic calendar which is a floating lunar calendar such that the Islamic New Year can be in July one year and about 10 years later in May, and the Coptic/Pharaonic/Fishermen's calendar that has a totally different set of months from the other two (neither of which resemble each other in the slightest) but it does predict storms, heat waves and when to plant your eggplant.

To bring this back to endurance, the Egyptian federation mostly holds its rather dubious competitions on Tuesdays or Wednesdays so as not to compete with the more important show jumping competitions. They also never let anyone know when they are holding them unless you are part of the mysterious inner circle. The EERA rides are always on Friday mornings and always finish in time for brunch. Not that the guys are particularly worried about making Friday prayer.

I'll have to do some checking on the days of the week in ancient Egyptian with some of my Egyptologist friends, but I'm sure that the words involved had nothing at all to do in sound with ours. Interestingly enough the current Egyptian week starts on a Sunday and continues to Saturday. The days of the week are simply numbered with Sunday being Day One, Monday Day Two, and so on until Friday which is called Goma here, meaning the day of gathering for prayer. Then they go back to numbers for Saturday. If you want to drive through downtown Cairo in a hurry, Friday any time before noon prayer (or during noon prayer) is the time for it because the streets are fairly empty. Afternoon, everyone and his brother is out and about. Many shops close on Sundays for some odd reason as well. Very random.
