RE: [RC] my mustang hates dogs - Jim HollandHmmm....why would you want to "cure" this? Sounds like a "benefit" to me...perfect training horse for the dogs. It's true the horses need to be "tolerant" of the dogs, but on the other hand, the dogs need to learn to keep their distance from a horse...for their benefit and yours. Sunny feels the same way as your mare. It doesn't "go after" them any more, but he will teach them where his space is in no uncertain terms. I have a Great Dane who gets along great with my other horses, but my mustang mare hates him. She ignores him if he stays away from the fence, but if he gets too close she'll rush the fence with her ears pinned and her teeth bared. The other day on the trail a neighbor's dog ran up to us and she acted like she wanted to strike him. Luckily she responded to me and I could control her - I just distracted her by doing some leg yields and exercises, but it definitely concerned me. The BLM trainers tell me it's not unusual for mustangs to have an aversion to dogs and cats because they seem like coyotes and cougars, but I'd like her to learn to ignore them. Any ideas??
