RE: [RC] Proud Flesh Knees - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.Given that it is draining, I would recommend not putting ANYTHING on it until your vet has had an opportunity to take a look at it. The cleaning with saline is fine, but then just wrap it up until he/she sees it. Heidi I agree as well. Barbara, I'm not familiar with silver nitrate sticks, but the research indicates that anything that cauterizes proud flesh is in some circumstances likely to make it worse. More so in joint areas that move around a lot. Not always, but often enough according to the high-priced talent. I treated a lot of proud flesh wounds that wouldn't heal when treated with anything cauterizing over the counter (wound dust, scarlet oil, gentian violet, etc), and I could always get them healed up by carving down the excessive proud flesh, dressing them with a steroidal cream and a firm pressure bandage that minimized flexion. I'd especially be careful with a wound over the knee---those things can be a bitch to keep closed, you think it's healed and has good tissue closure, the horse goes trotting off and bam, the whole thing pops open again and you're back at ground zero.
