I do agree with all the safety
issues and so I apologize if I come across as not agreeing or a bit
crass...But this sport
is an expensive endeavor no matter how you look at it and for some folks just
attending an event is about their financial limit. To scrape together getting
enough funds for themselves and their horse and possibly some help if their
lucky might be it...and that's possibly more true if their new.
I do agree with the safety
issues. So, perhaps there are some more helpful suggestions out there
for folks that do need to go the tent route but want to be safe (like the person
who emailed about pitching the tent between the horse trailer and the truck)
because the routes that involve all the extra funds of trailers, campers,
and hotels aren't open to everyone. Heck, some folks might be piggybacking
their horse on someone elses trailer and their behinds in someone elses truck
and their tent in their backpack...but that shouldn't make them unwelcome
assuming everything else is prepared and on the ready.
Thanks!

Hello Everybody: As a manager for
the AERC, and someone who believes in "safety first," I thought I would
comment on tents at ride camps. Think about it: You're
all snug in your sleeping bag, in your ultra-lite tent, and somebody's
super-fit endurance horse is loose in camp...We all know that horses are
loose at times--especially at night, despite our best efforts to secure
them. In a tent, youu are literally a HUGE target for that horse to
spook at, and step through your tent, and literally on you! --Having been
in the hospital from a horse kick, resulting in a severely lacerated liver
(in my early twenties), I wouldn't wish that on anybody! Be
smart: Sleep in a LQ trailer, a motor home, a nearby hotel/motel, or
even in your truck. But, save the tents for the backpackers, or those
without our equine friends... Take Care, Cindy Hamberg (PS)
