[RC] Another View of Elevator Rides - Joane Pappas WhiteI have been monitoring the discussion on elevator rides. There are many different reasons why riders could be challenged, not dumbed, but an elevator ride. One of the most significant areas where the elevator rides would be challenging are for those who want to jump to 50's without giving up their competitive standings in LD for that year. Consider our situation: We choose to be limited distance riders who sponsor many juniors and newbies in this sport---as well as put lots of "long slow miles on young horses". We ride 25 to 35 miles and often ride multi-day rides at those distances. I would love to do a 50---and on many occasions---Ken and I, as well as our juniors and newbies over the years, have felt good enough to go for it. BUT we (as in sponsors, juniors, rookies and horses) are often in the running for mileage or other awards. If we skip LD to do a 50---it costs us important miles because we are not building miles in our own categories. Or if we adults do a 50---our junior is left without a sponsor. An elevator ride would allow all of us to compete in our chosen category, fulfill our responsibilities to our juniors or rookies if they are unable to go further, but still allow any of us who feel up to the task to "stretch" without risking all the prior efforts by not completing the LD portion of the ride.
