RE: [RC] [RC] Flaxen, Sabino gene - heidiI've been sitting out this discussion, but wanted to jump in and say that Kris is making a good point here. Sabino does not breed like a single-gene trait. It *may* be an "on/off" switch (like the Lp gene in appaloosas) with additional modifiers controlling the degree and type of expression, or it *may* be a polygenic trait with no main "on/off" gene. In other words, because of the way sabino breeds and the wild variance in expression, it's probably incorrect to talk about a "sabino gene." It's a pattern that is likely controlled by multiple genes. Thanks for jumping in here, Nicole. I've not had time to comment, either. Equine geneticists are fairly certain that the sabino trait is NOT due to a single gene, but rather is polygenic. You list some of the possible combinations. In any event, the inheritance mode for sabino is NOT worked out, and the fact that it is not likely to be a single gene is about all that one can truthfully say about it. So talking about a "sabino gene" is not accurate. Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
